	The Time in Kherson, Ukraine

The city of Kherson is an administrative center of Kherson Province, Ukraine. It's a big river and sea port, an industrial center specializing in ship-building, agricultural machine-building, and canning industry. The area of the province is 28,500 sq. km. The population of the province is 1,283,000, the population of Kherson is 402,000.

Kherson stretches along the high right bank of the river Dnepr. This is the area where the Dnepr divides into many branches and forms many islands. Kherson is situated on the plain territory called the steppe.

The climate of Kherson is moderate continental. The average temperature here is quite high, + 9÷10º C and the number of sunny days in the year is about 260-280.

Kherson Province has rich history and culture. It is densely spotted with archeological excavation sites (mezolithic, copper and bronze ages). In the 8th-2nd centuries B.C. the Kherson steppes were part of the Scythian state, then this territory was inhabited by proto-Slavic tribes. In the 10th-13th centuries A.D. it was part of Kyiv Rus, but after the Tartar-Mongol invasion it fell under the control of the Crimean Khannat which in its turn later became part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire.

After the Cossacks, the most militant part of the Ukrainian population, founded Zaporizhka Sich, a heavily fortified military base on the southern frontier of the Slav territory, numerous raids against Tartars and Turks were carried out. In 1774 the territory became a part of Russia. In 1778 on the site of Fort Alexander-Schanz the city of Kherson/ was founded. In 1803 it became the administrative center of Kherson Province.

On the territory of Kherson there are quite a few parks. It is one of the most "green" cities in Ukraine.
